"I am obliged to set a libretto to music in fourteen days. I'll give you a week to prepare the libretto for me. We will see who has more courage of the two of us.
This injunction from Donizetti to his librettist Romani launched the composition of L'Élixir d'amour, without doubt the Italian composer's comic masterpiece. Laurent Pelly's facetious production transposes this giocoso melodrama to 1960s Italy, complete with haystacks and vespas. The staging is a clever blend of fantasy and poetry, from the whirring arrival of Doctor Dulcamara to Nemorino's famous romance with Adina. This production of L'Élixir d'amour, a Belcanist opera par excellence, has become a great classic of the Opéra national de Paris.
