Description

The last work of a life devoted entirely to dance, Rudolf Nureyev's La Bayadère has become one of the jewels in the repertoire of the Paris Opera Ballet. Created in 1992, La Bayadère tells the story of the thwarted love affair between the dancer Nikiya and the noble warrior Solor, who is promised to the formidable Gamzatti, in a fantasized India with elephants, tigers and palanquins. Rudolf Nureyev has adapted Marius Petipa's choreography - to music by Ludwig Minkus - by recomposing the ballet with virtuoso variations and large ensemble movements. The famous Kingdom of the Shadows in Act III is considered a summit of choreographic art. The Paris Opéra's undisputed success, the unprecedented richness of Ezio Frigerio's sets and Franca Squarciapino's costumes make La Bayadère a flamboyant spectacle.
