In addition to his theatrical work, Patrice Chéreau embarked very early on in the staging of opera. After making a remarkable debut at the Festival de Spoleto and the Paris Opera, he established himself on the international scene on the occasion of the centenary of the Bayreuth Festival in 1976, with a historic production of Richard Wagner's Tetralogy, L ' Nibelung ring. Through a hundred documents from the collections of the BnF, IMEC and private collections (manuscripts, correspondence, drawings, models, photographs, etc.), the exhibition questions the specificity of the work carried out by Patrice Chéreau for the lyrical scene.
In this catalog, the testimonies of those with whom he has worked meet new eyes, nourished by the memories of his closest collaborators and the abundant archives he has left. All highlight the extreme sensitivity of the director, but also the ambiguity of his relations with the opera: between distrust and passion.
