Ballet in 3 acts.
Rudolph Nureyev himself had played the role of Basil with great success in Leningrad when he was just 21 years old; after his spectacular asylum application in France in 1961, he fought to make the work, much performed in the East, known in the West as well. He worked out a new choreography, took over the main lines of Petipa's version, but reduced the five acts to three acts and a prologue. To this end, John Lanchbery arranged the music by Ludwig Minkus.
