Three romantic heroes with a lonely destiny: Tatiana, a young Romanesque woman in search of absolution, Onegin, a distant dandy who hides his emptiness under an abominable morgue, and Lenski, abandoned by his literary idol. Between these three, sterile affections herald inexorable social ruin. All the resources of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow are mobilised to make this opera an exceptional evening of theatre and song: first-rate vocal composition with notably the baritone Mariusz Kwiecien and the Bolshoi orchestra and choir conducted by Alexander Vedernikov. With a staging that is as dark as it is effective - a large dining table appears in the middle of a living room - director Dmitri Tcherniakov separates two different worlds and gives the drama a clarity rarely achieved. The exceptional quality of this production and the great success of its first edition inevitably led to the high-definition remix of this programme to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its initial release.
