Description

Gluck's final lyrical tragedy features three characters tormented by what contemporary psychology would describe as post-traumatic reactions: Iphigenia, a survivor of the sacrifice demanded by the warlike madness of her countrymen; Orestes, consumed by remorse for having murdered his mother; and King Thoas, obsessed by nightmarish visions of his own death. Director Krzysztof Warlikowski sets the play in the world of a retirement home, where the heroine, an aging resident, is haunted by her past. In this stifling closed-door setting, characters as mythical as they are real confront each other in an attempt to put an end to the perpetual cycle of violence.
