Is it because the writer Henry Murger had himself experienced this existence during his youth? This would explain the accuracy with which he describes, in his Scènes de la vie de bohème, these broke, starving artists, ready to burn a manuscript for a little fire, but who dreamed of another life in the age of the triumphant materialistic bourgeoisie. Giacomo Puccini's take on these scenes, through the relationship of the poet Rodolfo and the fragile Mimi, provides us with a moving story and some of his most beautiful operatic pages. Director Claus Guth places their broken love in space and creates a universe where the past resurfaces in hallucinatory flashes. In this surprising setting, Puccini's music resonates sublimely and gives way to the very essence of the work: memory as a tenuous link that holds us to life.
