Description

Program of the opera Beatrice di Tenda - Opéra Bastille from February 09 to March 07, 2024

False accusation, iniquitous imprisonment, torture and death sentence: such is the unfortunate fate of Beatrice di Tenda, a real-life character who became the heroine of Vincenzo Bellini's opera. The opera premiered at La Fenice in Venice in 1833 to no avail, much to the chagrin of the composer who took on powerful themes such as justice and the aspiration to freedom, in a music of limpid, lyrical lines. For its entry into the Opéra national de Paris repertoire, this little-known score is staged by Peter Sellars, who takes on an Italian opera for the first time. With set designer George Tsypin, he sets the work in a steel-walled palace, evoking the grip and surveillance of a ruthless dictatorship.
