Description

Giulio Cesare Opera program - Opéra Garnier from January 20 to February 16, 2024

A love story between two illustrious figures of Antiquity - Caesar and Cleopatra - and power struggles in Egypt: these ingredients alone could explain the immediate success of Julius Caesar when it premiered in 1724 at London's Haymarket Theatre, but if it has become Handel's most popular opera, it is above all thanks to its sumptuous orchestration and prodigious musical invention. Director Laurent Pelly sets the action in a museum storeroom, in the Egyptian antiquities department, creating a delightful contrast between the toga-clad characters and the bustling handlers. A playful way of breaking the codes of opera seria, which was precisely Handel's aim.
