Description

Médée Opera program - Opéra Garnier from April 10 to May 11, 2024.

Perhaps the most unfathomable character in mythology: Medea, the sorceress, betrayed by her husband Jason, takes revenge by offering his lover a poisoned dress, and then killing her own children. In 1693, Marc-Antoine Charpentier premiered his only lyric tragedy, based on a libretto by Thomas Corneille, at the Académie royale de Musique - the forerunner of the Opéra national de Paris - in the presence of Louis XIV. Three centuries after its creation, this richly orchestrated baroque score returns to the Opéra national de Paris for the first time, under the direction of William Christie. Renowned for his highly readable readings, director David McVicar transposes the action to the Second World War, reinforcing the tragic character of the heroine.
