Description

A romantic ballet par excellence, Giselle marks the culmination of a new aesthetic. Vaporous tutus, white gauze, tulle and tarlatan invade the stage. In the fantastic transfiguration of a tragedy, the Wilis participate in the illusion of immateriality. Premiered at the Royal Academy of Music on 28 June 1841, the ballet travelled to Russia and disappeared from the repertoire before its return to France in 1910. It is today in the version of Patrice Bart and Eugène Polyakov, faithful to the original choreography of Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, that the ballet continues to confirm its early success. Luminous and terrestrial scenes, nocturnal and spectral visions: dance becomes the language of the soul and the ballerina, through her aerial presence, seems to triumph over gravity.
