Description

What better tribute to the man who invented fantastic realism in literature than to make him the main character of an opera where all verisimilitude is abolished and where the imagination imposes its own rules? In Offenbach's work, Hoffmann, presented as a cursed poet and composer, evokes his memories of love and leads us into a universe where the boundaries between dream and reality are porous. Director Robert Carsen masterfully plays with the theater within the theater and, through a spectacular mise en abyme process, reveals the backstage of the opera.
