Description

"The opera must make the public cry, tremble and die," said Bellini to Pepoli, who went looking for a subject in the dark romanticism, populated by diaphanous heroines. The Puritans, the composer's last opera, tells the story of a thwarted love between a royalist and the daughter of a republican, who will fall into madness. A perilous work to which Laurent Pelly offers a Piranesian dramaturgy, as precise and sharp as is this great Belcanist festival.
