Description

Under the flickering light of a ceiling lamp, two men observe each other, confront each other, guided by a strange voice. This duet soon becomes a crowd, a swell, which comes alive to the rhythm of Chopin's preludes. Crystal Pite's second creation for the Paris Opera Ballet, Body and Soul unfolds waves of words and gestures that form the material of a secret scenario. Through the movement of the dancers, the words of a woman are constantly embodied, like a duet between body and soul. Addressing the theme of mourning, the Canadian choreographer stages the contrary impulses that challenge the unity of each person. In a mysterious half-light, bathed in sound effects, this ballet in three acts of great dramatic power leads, not without humor, to a tonic and exuberant finale.
