The L'Histoire de Manon Programme - September 2026 at the Opéra Garnier accompanies Kenneth MacMillan's iconic ballet, inspired by the celebrated novel by Abbé Prévost. It recounts the fate of Manon, a beautiful and seductive sixteen-year-old, driven by a love of pleasure, whose choices gradually lead her towards a tragic destiny.

Created in 1974 at the Royal Opera House and added to the Paris Opera repertoire in 1990, this sweeping narrative ballet reveals the British choreographer's psychological insight and flair for theatre. Kenneth MacMillan unfolds an intense choreography in the service of a story of passion, desire and downfall.

Nicholas Georgiadis's sumptuous sets and costumes draw a contrast between Manon's modest origins and the dazzling world to which she aspires. The purity of the movement and the visual richness of the staging highlight the tensions that shape the heroine's journey.

Set to excerpts from the music of Jules Massenet, L'Histoire de Manon follows the stirring love story of Manon and Des Grieux, from a small inn on the outskirts of Paris to the swamps of Louisiana. This programme invites audiences to discover a ballet of great dramatic power, in which the force of love collides with the cruelty of fate.
