Description

Adriana Lecouvreur Opera program - Opéra Bastille from January 16 to February 07, 2024.

The life of Adrienne Lecouvreur, member of the Comédie-Française and admired by Voltaire, was as brief as her mysterious death. Was she really poisoned by a bouquet of violets sent by her rival, the Princesse de Bouillon, in love with the same man: Maurice de Saxe? This is the plot of Eugène Scribe and Ernest Legouvé's play, from which Francesco Cilea's librettists drew their inspiration. The Italian composer, close to the verismo movement, found material for a refined score, premiered in Milan in 1902 with Caruso in the role of Maurizio. At the Opéra Bastille, David Mc Vicar's staging, as refined as a Watteau painting, resurrects an ebullient 18th century where the passions of life on stage echo the passions of real life.
