Description

Simon Boccanegra Opera Program - Opéra Bastille from March 12 to April 03, 2024.

Simon Boccanegra may not be Verdi's best-known opera, but it was one of his favorites, so much so that 24 years after its premiere in Venice in 1857, it was completely reworked. What a destiny Simon Boccanegra had! This former privateer, elected doge of Genoa, would like to restore concord within his Council, divided between patricians and plebeians, and peace with Venice, his eternal rival. But this humanist is also consumed by the loss of his daughter, kidnapped when she was a child. In this intimate political drama, the composer undoubtedly found echoes of his own life, having contributed to Italian unification and lost his first two children. Musically, Verdi created a character of great psychological richness. A richness accentuated by Calixto Bieito's staging, which projects us into Simon's thoughts, not forgetting an evocation of the sea - the only place where the former privateer was truly happy - via the hull of a huge ship.
