Don Pasquale opera program - Opéra Garnier from September 14 to October 13, 2023.

An old fool, Don Pasquale, thinks he's playing a good trick on his nephew Ernesto by announcing that he's going to marry a young girl - which will deprive him of any inheritance. But the charming Norina and Dr. Malatesta catch him in his own trap. Gaetano Donizetti's opera, inspired by the characters of the commedia dell'arte, features a series of disguises, a sham marriage and a fool's game. A lively score, successfully premiered in Paris in 1843, in which the author of Lucia di Lammermoor shows a real talent for comedy and renews the opera buffa form. While director Damiano Michieletto plays with the eras, he retains the lightness of the work and brings out its bittersweet tenderness. This is one of the trademarks of Donizetti, who always empathized with his characters, even when they were old fogies.
