Description

An essential work of musical modernity and one of the most emblematic of the 20th century, Wozzeck is a dazzling work. In adapting Georg Büchner's play, Alban Berg succeeded in portraying the social and psychological violence that crushes the soldier Franz Wozzeck, with an accuracy and strength rarely achieved in opera. Subjected to the captain, abused by the doctor, deceived by Marie, the character of Wozzeck leads us to think of madness in its most tragic form for the lonely individual as well as for the collective. An expressionist universe that blends with an equally obviousness in the staging of William Kentridge, a major visual artist of the contemporary scene. His drawings and videos appear as projections of Wozzeck's imagination, exposing the horror of the first world conflict.
