ROMEO ET JULIETTE / PROGRAMME / Bastille / Juin / 2023
Description
Program for the Romeo and Juliet Opera at the Opéra Bastille - June 17 to July 15, 2023.
How many composers have been inspired by Shakespeare's lovers of Verona? From Vincenzo Bellini to Leonard Bernstein and Hector Berlioz, the list is long. If Charles Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, premiered during the 1867 World's Fair, was an instant hit with the public, it's undoubtedly because it most finely translated the life drive of the famous lovers. Four love duets, a fiery waltz, luminous, lyrical music: the entire score tingles with desire and freshness. Who better to celebrate this hymn to youth than Thomas Jolly, one of the most inventive directors of his generation? After his 2016 production of Cavalli's Eliogabalo, this Shakespeare connoisseur signs his second collaboration with the Opéra national de Paris.
