Description

Pleasure but not love: this is what the heroine of La Traviata quickly comes to understand, as she is urged by the moral elite to stay in her place.

For director Simon Stone, known for skillfully transposing works into our present day, Violetta Valéry is no longer the courtesan of Alexandre Dumas fils's time, whose La Dame aux camélias inspired Giuseppe Verdi's opera. She becomes a contemporary diva, living in a world where image is traded through "selfies" and "likes."

In this hyperconnected world, modernity does not erase the underlying tragedy: as in the 19th century, Violetta is forced to sacrifice her love for Alfredo on the altar of an unforgiving social morality.

This contemporary reading echoes Verdi's deeper intentions, whose feverish and virtuosic music denounces the violence of a society driven by appearances, a machine that crushes individuality, especially that of women seeking freedom.

A deeply moving and incandescent opera, where passion, sacrifice, and social critique blend into a work of enduring intensity.
