CollectionMarc Chagall. The ceiling of the Opera Garnier
Description
The Ceiling of the Paris Opera - Palais Garnier, 1964Marc Chagall (1887 - 1985).
It was in 1963 that André Malraux, then Minister of Culture, proposed to Marc Chagall to paint the ceiling of the Opera. After some hesitation, he accepted and embarked on the immense work that a 220m2 work represents, where the subjects must occupy the space while binding together harmoniously.
To do this, Chagall decided to pay homage to 14 mythical composers, with a palette of 5 colours that wonderfully echo the movements orchestrated by Chagall's pictorial universe associated with music, ballet and song.
