Description

The Hamlet Programme, September 2026 at the Opéra Bastille accompanies a major work of French grand opera, inspired by William Shakespeare's most famous and haunting tragedy. In Hamlet, Ambroise Thomas brings to the operatic stage the troubled fate of the Prince of Denmark, confronted with his father's murder and an impossible quest for truth.

In the adaptation by librettists Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, Shakespeare's drama unfolds with renewed intensity, carried by a score rich in contrasts. Premiered at the Paris Opera in 1868, the work combines the hallmarks of French grand opera, five acts, ballet and large-scale forces, with a profound focus on the inner turmoil of its hero.

Ambroise Thomas's score captivates through its scope, dramatic power and distinctive orchestration, notably featuring two saxophone solos. Beneath the spectacle's grandeur lies an intimate drama: that of a man trapped by his memories, doubts and obsessions.

In Krzysztof Warlikowski's production, presented here in the tenor version, Hamlet becomes a psychoanalytic journey into the heart of trauma. This programme invites audiences to discover a striking production in which theatrical power, musical richness and emotional depth come together.
